Carey Jones Chapman Tolcher is very proud to announce the completion of The Lighterman, a residential building in the Lower Riverside neighbourhood on Greenwich Peninsula. The project was designed by CJCT on behalf of Knight Dragon and delivered by Ardmore Construction. Turkington Martin were responsible for the landscape design and Conran developed the interior design concept for the private units.
The site is strategically located along the riverside, providing amazing views for its residents. It consists of three residential buildings arranged around a shared courtyard. It delivered 224 units in total, of which 56% are generously sized affordable homes, including social units with accessible flats in line with the Royal Borough of Greenwich framework.
The three buildings explore different materials and textures: each building is imbued with unique characteristics, but together they form a coherent composition with a strong sense of identity. Two of the buildings are covered in rich tones of brickwork cladding which contrasts gracefully with the mesh panels of the balconies. The third building, a 24-storey tower called The Lighterman, is defined by an elegant white frame that provides shadow and depth to the façade. A considered pattern of full-height windows and metallic cladding is held within the frame, providing a texture and warm tones. Balconies and glazing to principal living spaces are positioned at the corners to maximize dual aspect views.
We embarked on this journey in 2013 when we were approached by the client to develop Phase 2 master planning, which consisted of six plots in total located on the lower riverside area. Initially we worked collaboratively with DSDHA, Pilbrow & Partners, and Turkington Martin, to consider the site holistically with the goal of creating coherent surroundings. We continued the journey with Knight Dragon and developed the design for one of the residential plots within the master plan. The overall development consists of high-quality living areas, plenty of green spaces, art, food and culture, creating a lively neighborhood within 20 minutes of central London.
Planning approval was granted in March 2014 and work started on site at the beginning of 2015. We consider ourselves privileged to have taken part in the prestigious redevelopment of Greenwich Peninsula, and are proud of delivering the project – alongside Ardmore’s professional team – from concept to completion successfully.
