CJCT have worked closely with Town Centre Securities PLC and Leeds City Council over the last three years to positively enhance the Kirkgate Market retail experience with a new commercial development on George Street. A transformational proposal to provide a new front door to the market, comprising flexible ground floor commercial space with an Aparthotel above featuring 126 keys will be provided.
As an urban design proposal, the ability to ‘mend’ George Street cannot be underestimated. A street scape fractured by redundant commercial buildings will be completed with a building of gravitas to compliment Victoria Gate. For the first time clear views are provided into Butchers Row to open the market experience to a wider demographic.
Plans panel praised the quality of the proposals and the architect’s approach in ensuring that the Grade 1 listed Leeming House and other key attributes of the site are recognised and enhanced in ways which are both sympathetic and dramatic.
