Continuing our long term involvement, and many successes, as master planner and architect at Riverside Quarter in the London Borough of Wandsworth, Carey Jones Chapman Tolcher have now submitted a planning application for 9 Eastfields Avenue, the final phase comprising 172 units over 16 storeys.


9 Eastfields Avenue will become the landmark building on the site, a complete transformation and regeneration of the former oil and gas works at the confluence of the River Wandle and on the south bank of the River Thames.


The overall development includes a total of 9 varying height residential buildings, with commercial uses on the ground floor, 1, 2 and 3 bed apartments and penthouses with dramatic sloping roof lines, all delivered over 15 year. The site is arranged using a staggered plan form orientated east/west along the riverbank to maximise views across the Thames and create spaces between the architecture, forming private and semi-public open green spaces.


The whole development has made a dramatic contribution to the local townscape and created a safe, friendly place to live, work and play. The positioning of the new block will create a memorable vista from Wandsworth Bridge and the Thames north side into the site and punctuate the end of Eastfields Avenue.


The new building is comprised of four elements, one of which is a 16 storey block looking across the Thames, all of which are finished in dark bronze and champagne bronze metal cladding with a mega grid expressed as enclosing frames.


These frames open up toward the river, utilising a saw tooth plan to create balcony/living spaces with clear river views and catching the sun from east and west. The main river façade creates a series of dual aspect winter gardens which echo previous phases, while the roof levels are home to brown field displaced habitat zones.


CJCT’s initial remit over 10 years ago was to improve the much earlier low density outline Planning Consent; which we achieved by a skilful reconfiguration of the buildings to increase residential density/unit numbers, and provide views of the river.


The sense of place, and valuable riverside green spaces created between the buildings add to the housing benefits the masterplan has brought, and many residents take delight in calling Riverside Quarter their home.
