CJCT was invited to provide competition proposals for a new purpose-built ‘headquarters’ building for Harrogate Borough Council, in order to help them consolidate their service provision and operate more efficiently as a team.
The site had a number of unique challenges, including partial woodland, varied topography and a residential context. In response to this, the design was developed as a collection of ‘houses on the hillside’, a cluster of interconnected forms to break down the mass of the scheme and minimise the impact on the site. The team explored the use of natural materiality, including reclaimed stone and blackened cedar cladding, to give the proposals and contemporary but contextual feel.
In order to assist the council in improving their sustainability credentials, the team provided advice on how the scheme might achieve BREEAM Very Good, Excellent and Outstanding ratings.
