CJCT were appointed to act as design team leader within the Simons Developments design team to provide office accommodation for the re-location of West Dorset District Council (WDDC), a new central public Library and adult education centre which is accessible to all.
Located within the heart of the historic town centre the scheme is identified as a gateway ‘catalyst’ that supports the adjacent Charles Street Master Plan commissioned by WDDC.
Working closely with WDDC CJCT developed a highly sustainable scheme which enhances the unique local character and existing townscape, reflecting surrounding archaeological interest whilst avoiding a pastiche of styles. The building maximises passive environmental technologies rather than ‘bolt-on’ mechanisms; offering a low carbon solution, it has naturally ventilated internal spaces, maximised natural light and reduced energy demand.
