80 Study Bedrooms

Project Description

CJCT have been commissioned to design a student accommodation scheme near Kingston City Centre. The proposal demolished the poor quality existing office building and created 80 study bedrooms in cluster flats to be occupied by Kingston University students.
The site lies within the Grove Crescent Conservation area and the design intent was to create a well-mannered development, which strikes the right balance between a sensitive approach to its historic context and the creation of a contemporary building which has integrity. The scale and massing is carefully controlled through contextual proportions and an ordered rhythm. A simple palette of high quality materials, typical of the area, are used in a contemporary way to add character and quality to the conservation area.
The design echoes the narrow module of the traditional building plot, creating strong rhythms with architectural elements along the street and expressing verticality.
