A new multi-storey car park over five levels in the centre of Luton, providing the town with an additional 677 car parking spaces and 72 cycle spaces in a centralised location in order to offset the recent loss of numerous surface level car parks. The scheme features focal entrance cores for wayfinding and an innovative twisted fin cladding system to facilitate natural ventilation internally.
The primary cladding strategy is formed around a simple kit of just two components – a straight metal section and one that twists through 90 degrees. Components are vertically aligned to create a long find that turns between the ‘open’ and ‘closed’ positions. The position and rotation of each component can be varied to create a dynamic façade arrangement within a controlled set of rules.
