Agard Court, a 244 bed student accommodation scheme for the University of Derby has reached completion in time for the 2018 academic intake. Directly abutting Friar Gate Railway Bridge, the building responds to the historic context of the site through subtle twists in plan and a stepped silhouette. Despite the limited space available on the site, the design team were able to create a courtyard space for students making use of the existing tram tracks and cobbled paving.
As part of the University Quarter wider masterplan, CJCT also designed and delivered the adjacent One Friar Gate Square which is now home to the University of Derby’s School of Law and Social Sciences. The site lies within the Friar Gate conservation area and required a skillful integration of contemporary architecture in a valued and historic pocket of the City Centre to deliver a bold and innovative workspace building.
