CJCT dived at the opportunity to work with South London Swimming Club (SLSC) on a fresh project at Tooting Bec Lido and were ecstatic to have our proposal shortlisted by the committee. The brief required the modernisation of a number of facilities at the shallow end of the 100 yard fresh water lido, whilst further reaching lido improvement works are carried out on the pump room and substation.
Tooting Bec lido has an extremely passionate community of swimmers that use the unheated lido 365 days of the year! Collaborating with McFarlane Associates, Stace, OR Consult and Balanced Structures, our vision, was to preserve this local institution for the next 100 years, using a set of key architectural moves that improve the user experience, whilst being respectful and complimentary to the existing lido aesthetic.
Our clean, elegant proposal incorporated a multi-proposed café/function room, entrance reception and shop. Greatly softening the user’s approach into the lido. A slender zinc roof links the entrance building too the modernised toilet and changing facilities which incorporate a new spectator viewing deck. Sadly, the proposal remains on the starting blocks, being pipped to the medals by our competition, we wish the project smooth sailing and thank the SLSC for the opportunity!
